Melanie was born in Portsmouth, NH right over the bridge from Maine. Her mother and military father planted the seed of inspiration of landscape through experiencing different parts of the U.S. during her early years due to her father being stationed at various Air Force bases.
Melanie has been working in public education since 2003, focusing on the cycle of shared experiences within teaching and learning visual art. She has been blessed working with countless talented young artists throughout Maine.
Inspiration:
Through my art, I aim to create new pathways and connections to understanding ourselves and our connections to the natural world. Finding patterns and relationships in the natural world bring harmony and understanding. Parts to the whole, like fractals of space and time when connected bring unity and understanding, using landmass in sections with overlays of imagery and color, I hope to help the viewer transcend time and space to consider their relationship to the whole.
As an artist, it is my goal to create an opportunity for self reflection, a deeper investigation on one’s place in the world. Using topographic maps of Maine out of context and juxtaposed with imagery, it allows the viewer to contemplate their own connections to the land and their relationship within it.
